Evening Bat Admitted

Evening Bat Admitted

Took in this evening bat (Nycticeius humeralis) the other day from a local home owner that found it on the ground in her yard. This species is a true hibernating species, meaning it will have to stay in captivity until spring when it can be released. No injuries found at this time. Suspect it fell victim to the recent cold snap we experienced here in Fort Worth.

*DISCLAIMER*
Brandi has her rabies prexposure and gets her levels checked on a regular. Never touch a bat you find injured or on the ground. Their teeth are super sharp and can even go  through some gloves.

Imprinted Opossums

Imprinted Opossums

Took in a brother/sister pair of Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) that somebody tried to rehab after their mother was killed. Not sure how big they were when the person got them, but it was very early spring. Now these two are morbidly obese (male weighed in at 14 pounds, female at 11) , very imprinted to people, have never been outdoors, never learned how to hunt or forage for themselves, and they were fed a very poor diet.

For size reference, Brandi is 5’4″ and holding them against her body in the pictures.
They have also been kept together the entire time so there is the possibility that the female may be pregnant as opossums reach sexual maturity at an early age due to their short lifespan.
These two will NOT be able to be rehabbed and released to the wild.

Situations such as this are why permits are needed to rehab wildlife. It ensures proper training in care and medical needs to return wildlife back to the wild.

Black Vulture Intake

Black vulture (Coragyps atratus) that we took in this evening. Very thin and has a broken right wing. Will get it to the vet for a second opinion on the break.

Tires for Trailer to Transport Wildlife from Houston to DFW

Tires for Trailer to Transport Wildlife from Houston to DFW

We are in need of some immediate help. A couple of weeks ago we were the target of vandals. They slashed all four tires on one of our vehicles as well as the rescue’s recently purchased trailer. The trailer was also sprayed with inappropriate graffiti (which is blurred out in the photo). Our vehicle insurance covered the cost of replacing the tires on our vehicle, minus our deductible, but the trailer is not covered by our vehicle or homeowner’s insurance.

We have been asked to go to the coast to help transport wildlife back to the DFW area. The wildlife rehabilitators and animal shelters are overwhelmed with animals and some rehabilitators have had their homes flooded so are having to place their animals with other rehabilitators. The animals will be brought back to the DFW area and distributed among the rehabilitators here in the area. We will take in as many as we can house as well.

So this is where we need your help. With the help of a great friend, Discount tire has agreed to replace the tires at cost, so $265. Since all four tires are flat, we will either have to buy a jack to change the tires ourselves or have the trailer towed which will cost around $135. So we need your help raising the money to replace the tires. Any amount raised over the $265 will go toward paying to have the trailer towed to Discount Tire. As for the graffiti, we will try to remove the offensive remarks and cover it as best we can for now. We will have to have it professionally removed at a later date.

If there are any funds raised over and above that, we will use that money to help with the cost of gas and to purchase supplies, like formula, syringes, nipples, cotton balls, white paper towels, baby blankets, extra caging, etc. We will also distribute some of those supplies to others that are taking in animals as well. If you have any of the above supplies (except formula as we use a special kind that can’t be purchased at the local stores) and would like to donate them to us, please contact us. Any donations can also be mailed to us at the address below.

You can help fund an incubator for NEWRR

You can help fund an incubator for NEWRR

We are super excited to announce that we are now permitted by the state of Texas to take in small mammals and bats. And as things always seem to work out, day after we got our official notice, we took in two baby squirrels and yesterday we took in 6 baby opossums!

One thing to help ensure the health of these babies is proper temperatures. An incubator designed for babies is a must. Keeping baby animals warm can be the difference between life and death — just one incubator can save the lives of hundreds of animals. Baby Warm is helping us get a lifesaving incubator for the baby animals in our care. There are two ways you can help us: make a tax-deductible donation and share this link. Even if you cannot donate, please share the link to your wall. The more people we reach, the quicker this can happen. We only have 30 days to reach our goal. We continue to do what we do through the generous help of our followers and dedicated volunteer team. Thank you for all your support! http://www.babywarm.org/projects/brandi-n/

Injured Eastern Coachwhip

Took in this Eastern coachwhip (Masyicophis flagellum flagellum) that was stuck in somebody’s wooden fence. Snake has a bunch of cuts on it from trying to get free. Also had a bunch of fly eggs and ant bites. You can see some of the ant heads still stuck on the body from where they latched on. Cleaned it up, removed all the ants and eggs, it’s on antibiotics to prevent infection and the wounds are being treated. Expected to make a full recovery. Just will take some time.

94 Reptiles Transferred in SPCA Seizure

94 Reptiles Transferred in SPCA Seizure

The SPCA in Dallas, Texas, took in 421 animals from a home in Caldwell County, Texas, in February 2017. Of those animals, 94 reptiles were transferred to NEWRR. This included 78 snakes, 7 blue-tongued skinks, 4 aquatic turtles, 2 bearded dragons, 1 Cuban knight anole, 1 tegu and 1 Savannah monitor. This is the largest single intake we have had to date.

For pictures of the animals, please visit our Facebook page

Unfortunately none of the animals came with enclosures or accessories (lights, heat pads, water dishes, etc.), so we have had to purchase additional tubs and enclosures to house these animals. We have already spent over $700 for tubs, paper towels, mite treatment and other supplies. Several of the lizards have medical issues that will need to be addressed, like metabolic bone disease, and at least two of the snakes have upper respiratory infections. Medications, heat pads, water dishes, LOTS of paper towels, special bedding for some of the snakes that require high humidity, UVB lights, etc, will need to be purchased.

We breed our own rodents to feed the animals here at NEWRR, but with the addition of 78 snakes we will have to purchase food from a supplier and that will be expensive. We will also need to increase our purchase of other feeders including crickets, Dubia roaches, minnows and guppies.

Two additional turtle tanks will also need to be acquired to separately house two turtles that prefer to be alone. They are not aggressive, but will constantly harass other turtles they are housed with.

Please consider making a donation to help these animals in need. Any amount is appreciated. Donations can be made using the below link. We could not do this without you!

And as always, a big THANK YOU to our amazing volunteers who helped with transport as well as cleaning tubs and helping to get these animals set up for quarantine. Amethyst Roney, Justin Roney, Devin Hallman, Mark Pyle and Stephen Pruitt, y’all rock!
